How Would You Spend Your Time?

Today I turn 27.

Thinking back on it, it was actually the best year of my life.

  • I fell in love for the first time.
  • I confronted hard things about myself.
  • I worked hard.
  • I held myself more accountable.
  • I had many adventures.
  • I invested more in the people and things I care about.
  • I finally, truly, have my health again.

A big reason for this has been my habits around journaling, reflection, and prospection (the opposite of reflection).

The power in those exercises does not lie in romanticizing the past or dreaming about the future.

Instead, they force you to think about what you are doing now. They force you to focus on doing the work that will eventually get you “there”.

This morning, to commemorate my birthday, I came up with a simple but surprisingly useful exercise that will help you achieve more clarity about where your life is headed, and how to get there.

It helps you identify your intrinsic motivation — something many of us have lost touch with.

The Rules and The “Why”
